Lymphedema Management

Lymphedema management is an important step to take when combating this lifelong complication.  Management steps are taking through many approaches including manual therapy and manual lymphatic drainage, therapeutic exercises, compression garments, and daily monitoring.  The trained staff at Peak Performance can assist you in ways to take these steps toward managing your diagnosis and what your specific should include.

What is lymphedema?

Lymphedema is a type of edema or swelling that occurs when there is a blockage in the lymphatic system. The lymphatic system consists of lymph or proteins that assist in waste removal and assist your immune system. When lymph becomes blocked, this causes the lymph to become have no way of moving through the system and causes the lymphedema that you see swelling in your leg or arm.

What causes lymphedema?

There are 2 types of lymphedema: Primary and Secondary

Primary lymphedema occurs when there is a congenital or inherited defect in the lymphatic system or malformation in the lymph nodes.

Secondary lymphedema occurs due to a health-related issue during your lifetime.

  • Surgery or removal of lymph nodes
  • Cancer or tumors that may block the lymphatic system
  • Radiation therapy
  • Infection
  • Trauma to lymph nodes

 Is there a cure?

Lymphedema is a lifelong diagnosis that cannot be cured but it can be managed. Management begins with information and education about your diagnosis. With knowledge and proper tools at your disposal you can stay on top of your lymphedema and avoid any worsening symptoms. Tools can be attained through physical therapy consisting of manual therapy and instruction in manual lymphatic drainage (MLD), therapeutic exercises with emphasis on clearing remaining or unaffected lymph nodes, use of compression garments, knowledge about your diet, and overall awareness of your body.
